Lecturing Positions in Muscat Oman from August 2012

Posted: 03-05-2012

Our Client is a reputable University College in peaceful Muscat, Oman, in the Middle East.

The College offers Internationally Accredited B Com Degrees. The students are Arabic Speaking Omani Citizens, both men and women. The Campus is within a large building, fully air conditioned, clean, neat and well kept. Facilities are good, and high standards of teaching and learning are maintained. The language of instruction is English, and an extensive program of English language support exists within the college to ensure that all students can understand their lectures and submit assignments in English.

The College is seeking the following teaching staff to take up their duties in August 2012.

  • Statistics and Operations Management (One post lecturing both subjects)
  • Accounting and Finance
  • Economics
  • English lecturers for the support program – this is not an Academic English post!
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  1. A B degree with a major in one or more of the subjects listed above.
  2. An Honours degree in the subject to be taught (from the List above) or, in the case of English, a TEFL or CELTA qualification in addition to the degree (we regret that the TEFL/ CELTA qualification alone is no longer acceptable to the Accrediting Agency, a B degree is essential)
  3. Not less than 2 full academic years recent teaching or lecturing the subject (from the list above) at a reputable school, college or university
  4. A demonstrated passion for the subject to be taught
  5. Excellent spoken and written English. Please note that lecturers for English must be English Home Language speakers, all others must speak fully colloquial English, heavy regional accents are not acceptable as the students are learning in a second language.
  6. Under the age of 58 and in excellent general health
  7. Have a valid South African passport with an expiry date in 2014 or later.
The College Offers
Pleasant working conditions, fully air conditioned
Small, generally well behaved classes of students
Two year contract
A housing allowance to allow the employee to rent a small flat in Muscat. Lecturers often share a flat between 3 or 4 people
Annual airfares
Work Permits paid by the College
No nonsense with exit-permits – they are not required in Oman once the Work Permit has been issued
Tax free Salary from US$2700 upward depending on qualifications and experience
Medical insurance is paid by the College
Dress regulations are relaxed – head coverings, long dresses etc are not required for ladies in Oman. Gents do not normally wear a tie.

Are there any limitations on the offer?
  • Non-Englshspeaking people with very slightly less-than-perfect English should not to apply for the English lecturing, but are welcome to apply for the other lecturing posts provided their language is colloquial and not heavily accented
  • Single females may not be accompanied by their own children while working in Oman
  • Couples are welcome to apply, and may take children with them, BUT the College does not offer help with school fees, and English medium schooling is all private an very expensive, we do not recommend that applicants take their children to Oman
  • Non-South Africans – we regret, the Work Permits are tied to the Nationality of the applicant and we may only submit South Africans
Placements in Education offers
Advice and support throughout the process. We have an office in Johannesburg and an Arabic speaking agent in Oman who looks after teachers appointed there.
